How to make your own bias tape

Here is how I make my own bias tape.  I always make extra because they are useful for binding necklines and Hong-Kong seam binding.  First cut the strips on a 45 degree angle to the straight grain as wide as desired. I cut mine 1.5 inches. Next sew the strips together, right sides facing, to create a strip as long as you need. When unfolded and pressed with an iron, the strips should form a straight line.

It is helpful but not absolutely necessary to have a bias tape maker, shown below, to help the bias strip fold. They come in different sizes, depending on how wide your strips are. The strips are inserted into the wide end of the bias tape maker. With a little coaxing, the strip will start to fold on itself as it exits the narrow part of the device. I use a blunt tapestry needle to help the fabric pass through. As it comes out of the bias tape maker, press the fold in place.

After pressing the entire strip,  I fold it in half and press again to get a double folded strip. I then wind it around a piece of cardboard and it's just like the pre-made strips you can buy at the fabric store.
